Store Trekking Poles on a Running Vest: A Carry Check

Before using a running vest to carry poles, confirm that the pack has a pole-carry system intended for the poles you own. An elastic loop, front pocket or shoulder strap is not automatically a pole attachment.

Start with the pack and pole instructions. Check the poles in their stored shape, then practice fitting, retention and retrieval with the complete load. Do not improvise a mounting method that the equipment maker does not support.

Identify the compatible system

Look for the manufacturer's description of the carry position and attachment sequence. Confirm any required accessory and which pole dimensions or designs it accepts. Similar-looking loops on two packs may have different jobs.

Collapse or fold the poles according to their instructions. Record the stored length and shape, including handles, baskets and exposed tips. Compare that complete shape with the pack's stated requirements.

Component Check
Attachment points Intended for pole carry on this pack
Stored pole shape Matches the system's stated limits
Retention Fastens normally using the instructed sequence
Tip position Controlled as described by the pole and pack makers
Loaded pack Water, clothing and closures remain usable

Test retention before moving

Attach the poles while standing in a safe place. Check each intended retention point and follow the maker's confirmation procedure. If an attachment cannot close normally, stop and resolve compatibility instead of pulling harder.

Move your arms and turn carefully. Check whether handles, baskets or tips interfere with your body or other equipment. Do not test retrieval beside other people or on uneven ground.

If you are still deciding whether to take poles, start with the trail running poles guide. That decision comes before choosing their storage position.

Include the full route load

Fill your water containers and add the equipment you intend to carry. Pole storage may use an area that also holds a jacket or other gear, depending on the pack design. Check that each item still has its intended place.

Use the pack capacity guide if the complete load exceeds the usable storage or attachment options. A larger liter number does not prove pole compatibility; the carry system must be checked separately.

Practice putting the poles away

Choose safe, clear ground. Stop, store the poles using the instructed sequence, check retention and walk briefly. Then stop again to retrieve them. Notice which part is difficult: reaching an attachment, controlling the tips or keeping other gear contained.

Repeat after making an allowed adjustment. Do not turn a difficult reach into a reason to pull the pack out of position or release a closure that secures another item.

Know when to use another setup

If the pack does not specify a suitable pole system, ask its maker before attaching poles. If the exact poles cannot be secured normally, use another verified carry option or reconsider the equipment plan for the route.

This check applies to LECAMO as it does to any pack: confirm the specific hardware and poles together. A general guide cannot certify a mounting method for every combination.
