PACK CAPACITY GUIDE

CHOOSE YOUR PACK.

Compare ROOT5, ROOT8 and ROOT18 by time outside, water access, required gear and carry load.

ROUTE-FIRST METHOD

START WITH THE DAY. NOT THE LITRE NUMBER.

The right capacity follows from time outside, water access, required equipment and conditions. Define those four inputs before comparing packs.

  1. 01TIME OUTSIDE

Estimate the full time from the trailhead to your return.

  2. 02WATER ACCESS

Map reliable refill points and the longest gap between them.

  3. 03REQUIRED GEAR

List the items the route and event rules require you to carry.

  4. 04CONDITIONS

Allow for the layers and equipment the weather may add.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

PACK CAPACITY ANSWERS.

What size trail running pack should I choose?

Choose from the route outward. ROOT5 supports a compact essentials-only carry plan, ROOT8 adds room for layers and required gear, and ROOT18 supports a greater single-day load for longer routes.

Is a 5L trail pack enough?

It can be when the route is shorter, water access is reliable and your required equipment list stays minimal. Move to a larger capacity when added layers, longer water gaps or required gear increase the load.

Does pack capacity equal water capacity?

No. The 5L, 8L and 18L figures describe total pack storage. Plan drinking water separately using time between reliable refills, weather and your individual needs.
