Technical Trail Running: Footwork, Line Choice and Control

Technical trail running means making frequent movement decisions on uneven or changing ground. The aim is not to make every section fast; it is to choose a line and pace that keep you balanced and able to respond.

How do you read technical terrain?

Look beyond your next step and scan the next several metres. Notice where the surface changes, where water may collect and where a safer line gives you more room to adjust. Slow down before the section, not after a mistake.

What is good trail running footwork?

Use short, quiet steps and let your stride adapt to the terrain. Keep your feet under you instead of reaching. When the ground is wet, loose or exposed, walking is a valid technique choice.

How should you choose a line?

Choose the line with the best combination of traction, visibility and consequence. The shortest line is not always the safest or fastest once a correction is needed.

How can you build control?

Practice on familiar moderate terrain, then add one variable at a time. Keep your hands free when possible and store essentials securely. A close-to-body trail running pack helps keep your attention on the route.
