Why Does Your Trail Vest Bounce? A Fit Troubleshooting Guide
Bounce is the single most common complaint about running vests, and it's rarely the vest's fault. Most bounce comes down to how it's tightened and how it's loaded, not the design. Here's how to actually track down the cause before you write off the vest entirely.
Tighten in the right order
Most runners grab the sternum straps first and stop there. Work through the whole vest instead: sternum straps first so the vest sits centered, then shoulder straps to remove vertical play, then side compression to kill side-to-side sway. If your vest has a bottom cord or hem adjustment, that's the last lock-in step, not the first.
Loose contents move more than loose straps
A half-full soft flask, a jacket balled up instead of rolled, or one item rattling in an otherwise empty pocket will bounce even on a vest that's tightened correctly. Pack heaviest items closest to your back, fill gaps so nothing has room to shift, and treat an empty pocket as a problem to solve, not just extra room.
Check it again after 20 to 30 minutes
Fit that felt right standing in your living room can loosen once you're moving, breathing harder and a flask starts to empty. Do a short jog before you commit to a long run, then re-tighten once you're actually out on the trail. Most bounce complaints that survive the first two fixes trace back to skipping this step.
When it really is the fit, not the technique
If you've tightened correctly, loaded sensibly and rechecked mid-run and it still bounces, the vest is probably the wrong size or the wrong shape for your torso. A vest built to sit close to the body, like the LECAMO ROOT5 or LECAMO ROOT8, only delivers that fit if you're in the right size to begin with, so it's worth measuring properly before you assume a new vest will solve it.
