Compact trail running gear arranged for route planning

What to Carry on a Trail Run: 5K to 50K

What to carry on a trail run depends less on the number on your watch than on the time, weather and distance from help. Use this 5K to 50K guide as a starting point, then adapt it to your route.

5K to 10K

For a familiar, supported loop, carry a phone, key and a small amount of water if there is no dependable refill. Add a light layer when weather can change. Keep the setup small enough that it does not become a distraction.

10K to 25K

Add hydration, a tested snack or fuel option, basic first aid and navigation appropriate to the trail. If the route is exposed, include sun or rain protection. Tell someone where you are going when the loop is remote.

25K to 50K

Plan around refill points and mandatory equipment. Carry enough water for the longest unsupported section, food you have practiced with, spare warmth and lighting when the timing requires it. A larger ROOT8 or ROOT18 may fit this list better than a small pack.

Pack by access frequency

Items you use often belong where you can reach them. Emergency items can stay protected but should remain findable. Before a long route, load the pack and rehearse drinking, eating and adding a layer without unpacking everything.

Capacity shortcut: use ROOT5 for a compact 5K–10K carry list, ROOT8 for variable 10K–25K routes, and ROOT18 when 25K+ routes require more layers, food or water.
