McDowell Mountain Frenzy Gear Guide: The 50-Mile Load
McDowell Mountain Frenzy’s 50-mile plan needs more than a smaller race’s pocket list. The long route includes Thompson Peak, and the organizer limits crew to headquarters. Build the remote part of the race around confirmed aid and bag access, then prepare a clear reset for the final loop.

Edition and route to confirm
The organizer lists December 5, 2026, in McDowell Mountain Regional Park near Fountain Hills, Arizona. Formats include 50 miles, 50K, 25K, 10 miles and 5 miles. The 50-mile description combines a large approximately 40-mile loop with the 10-mile course after returning to the start/finish. Its final time limit extends into the evening.
Organizer information that changes the load
For the 50-mile race, the current page permits drop bags at Dixie Mine and headquarters. Crew access is limited to headquarters; it is not available elsewhere on the course. Pacers are allowed for 50-mile runners on the final Competitive Track loop from approximately mile 40, with no pacers for other distances. Confirm the final bag-deposit instructions, transport departure and return arrangements before packing items you will need after the race.
Build the section-by-section packing plan
The organizer facts and LECAMO’s suggested packing actions are separated below. Suggested actions help you prepare; they do not add new race requirements.
| Decision | Organizer information | Suggested packing action |
|---|---|---|
| Remote large loop | Includes the Thompson Peak section | Carry the gear needed until the next confirmed support |
| Dixie Mine bag | Listed for the 50-mile race | Label by station and check when you can access it |
| Headquarters return | Around mile 40 in the route description | Prepare a final-loop refill and lighting check |
| Other distances | Different course and support arrangements | Do not inherit 50-mile bag or pacer permissions |
Prepare the handoff or refill before race day
Prepare a final-loop card with only the decisions you need at headquarters: fluid refill, remaining food, light, layers and whether the permitted pacer is ready. Your crew can stage that exchange at headquarters instead of trying to meet you beside the remote course. Keep the official aid chart with the card so the next section is clear.
Test the vest with this race’s complete load

Run with the remote-loop load first, including whatever your own plan and final rules require for an evening finish. Then simulate the headquarters stop and leave with the final-loop load. Test chest closures again after swapping supplies; a lighter load can settle differently from the fully packed start configuration.
ROOT5 is listed with 5L storage and two included 500ml soft flasks, giving one litre of container capacity. That describes the product configuration; it does not establish that the full race kit fits or that the carried water is sufficient. Compare your complete list with the current ROOT5 listing, then run with the filled load before choosing it for this entry.
Common preparation questions
Can my crew meet me at Dixie Mine?
The current page limits crew access to headquarters. Drop-bag permission does not create crew permission.
Do all distances allow pacers?
The checked instructions allow 50-mile pacers only on the final loop beginning around mile 40. Verify the final event guide.
