San Tan Scramble Gear Guide: Shuttle & Start-Line Kit

For San Tan Scramble, your first packing decision may happen before the trail: separate the gear that travels with you on the shuttle from items left with your car or crew. An otherwise complete race vest is unhelpful if its water or bib remains in a parking bag.

LECAMO Independent Race Gear Guides. Official sources checked October 1, 2026. Independent editorial guidance; use the organizer’s complete current instructions for your entry.

Edition and route to confirm

The current organizer page lists January 9, 2027, at San Tan Mountain Regional Park near Queen Creek, Arizona. Formats are 50K, 26K, 17K, 9K and 5K. The 2027 transport instructions make the Mountain View Church shuttle mandatory for 5K and 9K runners and encourage it for 17K runners. Check the final transport notice for pickup and departure details.

Organizer information that changes the load

Crew support is listed at the start/finish, and the checked page does not allow pacers. These arrangements make the start-line bag a separate planning task from remote support. Read the aid table for your specific route and the current drinking-container instructions. Do not assume that a shorter distance has a direct parking arrangement simply because its running time will be shorter.

Build the section-by-section packing plan

The organizer facts and LECAMO’s suggested packing actions are separated below. Suggested actions help you prepare; they do not add new race requirements.

Decision Organizer information Suggested packing action
Before boarding Mandatory shuttle for listed 5K/9K entries Carry bib, water, race shoes and the items required for your entry
Waiting at the start Race kit and transport kit serve different needs Choose where any waiting layer will go before running
Start/finish supplies Crew support is listed here Confirm any permitted bag location and retrieval process
On-course load Different distances use different routes Size food and fluid for your own aid intervals

Prepare the handoff or refill before race day

Make two small lists: with me at the start and available after finishing. Put transport confirmation and event instructions where you can reach them without unpacking food. If you use a waiting layer, decide whether it stays in a permitted bag, goes with your crew or becomes part of the carried load. Confirm the arrangement with the organizer instead of leaving it to a race-morning guess.

Test the vest with this race’s complete load

Pack as though the car will be unavailable until you finish. Wear the vest with filled bottles and your actual phone; check that the bib is visible and bottle caps are closed. Repeat the test after removing any waiting layer. For a longer entry, add the full food and weather kit you expect to carry before judging storage space.

ROOT5 is listed with 5L storage and two included 500ml soft flasks, giving one litre of container capacity. That describes the product configuration; it does not establish that the full race kit fits or that the carried water is sufficient. Compare your complete list with the current ROOT5 listing, then run with the filled load before choosing it for this entry.

Common preparation questions

Which runners must take the shuttle?

The checked 2027 instructions specify the 5K and 9K and encourage the 17K. Confirm the latest notice for your entry.

Can a crew plan replace my on-course carrying needs?

No. Start/finish support does not provide access during every section of your route. Use the distance-specific aid information.
