Backpack Tech Pack: What to Send Before Sampling

A backpack tech pack turns a product idea into a versioned set of requirements. It helps a supplier understand what to quote and gives both sides a reference when the sample is reviewed.

For a running vest or hiking pack, include more than a front-view sketch. Fit, pocket access, water equipment and closures need clear descriptions. The document can begin simply, provided missing decisions are marked as questions rather than filled with guesses.

Start with the product and version

Name the product, intended customer, carrying job and document version. Add a date and identify who can approve changes. Keep reference images separate from final requirements so the supplier knows what is inspiration and what must be reproduced.

If the project adapts an existing model, identify that model and list the exact changes. Do not redraw a catalog photo and imply that every visible feature can be modified. Ask the supplier to confirm which changes require development.

Use measurement points that can be repeated

Show where each dimension starts and ends. Note whether the bag is measured flat, assembled or packed, and identify the units. Ask the supplier to recommend achievable tolerances for the construction; do not assign an arbitrary tolerance simply to make the document look technical.

Section Include Avoid
Overall layout Front, back and side views A single unexplained image
Measurements Marked points and measuring method Dimensions with no reference points
Pockets Opening, depth and intended contents “Fits a phone” without a device size
Hydration Exact flask or reservoir reference Compatibility based on nominal liters alone
Components Named material and hardware requirements “Premium” as the only specification
Identity Artwork version, placement and size Loose files with conflicting versions

Build a component list

Record shell, lining, mesh, webbing, binding, closures, adjustment components, labels and packaging where relevant. Include supplier references when you have them; otherwise mark the requirement for discussion.

If a brand-name component is essential, name the component and its location. Saying “YKK zippers” without specifying which zipper belongs where leaves room for different interpretations. LECAMO has confirmed YKK zippers on ROOT5, but that does not establish the same component on every model or future project. Confirm the quoted configuration separately.

Explain the intended use of each important pocket

Give dimensions or references for the phone, flask, map or layer it must hold. State whether access is required while wearing the pack and whether a closure needs to be operated with the other hand occupied.

The supplier can then flag conflicts between pocket position, material and assembly. This is more actionable than asking for “more storage” after a sample arrives. Confirm agreed revisions in the document before requesting another sample.

Include an approval record

For each sample round, list accepted details, issues needing revision and decisions still open. Keep annotated photographs with the sample identifier. Agree how material substitutions and design changes are documented so the final production reference is clear.

Separate buyer wear evaluation from formal testing. If you need a specific performance or compliance claim, state the requirement and the supporting documentation you expect. A tech pack records requirements; it does not prove the finished product has met them.

Prepare the first inquiry without overbuilding the file

You can start with a clear brief, sketches, a packing list and open questions. Ask which additional documents the supplier needs before quoting or sampling. LECAMO reviews project requirements through its wholesale channel. Send the concept, estimated quantity, destination and delivery window, and ask which development requirements can be supported. Final specifications, options and commercial terms require project review.
