How Global Are Trail Running World Series? Three 2026 Calendars Compared
Three global series, three ways to read a race calendar.
Short answer: “World Series” does not describe a single kind of trail race. The 2026 UTMB World Series calendar announces 64 events across five continents. The Skyrunner World Series rules describe 19 races in 12 countries across four continents. The Golden Trail World Series lists eight world-series stops on its 2026 calendar. Those counts use different formats, so the biggest number does not automatically mean the broadest choice for every runner.

UTMB World Series: a large event network
UTMB's 2026 season announcement lists 64 events across five continents. An “event” can contain multiple race distances. The circuit is useful to inspect if you want a wide menu of locations and distances, or if its qualification system matters to your goal. Check the individual event page for course details, entry rules, and whether registration is open.
Skyrunner World Series: a narrower mountain format
The 2026 Skyrunner rules specify 19 races in 12 countries on four continents. The series describes technical mountain courses, typically around 20 to 30 km, with substantial climbing. A runner who prefers less technical paths should read the course profile carefully before assuming a shorter distance means an easier day.
Golden Trail World Series: selected shorter-format stops
The official 2026 Golden Trail World Series calendar lists eight stops, including Zegama-Aizkorri, Sierre-Zinal and the Muju finale. Its main series is distinct from the site's national-series listings. Counting every race on the wider site as a world-series round would inflate the comparison.
Which series should you follow or enter?
Start with terrain and course format, then distance and gain, then entry requirements and travel. If you want many location options, browse UTMB's event network. If steep, technical racing is the attraction, inspect Skyrunner. If you follow a compact set of prominent mountain-race stops, look at Golden Trail. These are descriptions of their published 2026 calendars, not a permanent ranking; organizers can change future schedules and course details.
Keep the counting units straight when comparing them. UTMB's 64 is an event count; one event weekend can contain several distances. Skyrunner's 19 describes races within a defined technical mountain circuit. Golden Trail's eight refers to the world-series stops shown on its own calendar, excluding national-series races. A simple table of totals without these labels can make one series appear larger for the wrong reason. For runners, entry conditions and course fit matter more than the calendar total.
