Classic Trail Running Races: UTMB, Western States and Tarawera

Short answer: UTMB Mont-Blanc, Western States 100 and Tarawera Ultra-Trail are three widely recognized ways to explore international trail racing. They represent different course experiences: alpine climbing, a California 100-mile route and a New Zealand event with several distance choices. This is an editorial selection, not a ranking of the world's “best” races.

UTMB Mont-Blanc: mountain terrain and major elevation gain

The official UTMB Mont-Blanc race list shows why a famous event name is only the start of course research. Its 2026 UTMB course is listed at 174 km with 9,700 m of elevation gain. CCC is listed at 108 km with 6,200 m of gain, while other events in the same program have different distances and entry conditions.

If your aim is a Mont-Blanc mountain experience, compare the actual courses rather than treating every event in the program as interchangeable. Look at climbing, technical terrain, weather exposure and qualification requirements. A shorter event can still be demanding when a large amount of climbing is packed into relatively few kilometers.

Western States 100: one historic California route

Western States Endurance Run describes a route of about 100.2 miles from Olympic Valley to Auburn, California. Its official participant guide explains the course and race rules. Unlike a multi-distance festival, the central draw here is a specific 100-mile challenge and its long-running place in trail-racing history.

That identity makes Western States a meaningful long-term goal for experienced runners, but reputation is not a preparation plan. Read the current qualification and entry process, then assess whether you have the training and race experience for the distance. Course conditions and organizer instructions take priority over older race recaps.

Tarawera: choose the distance that fits the experience

Tarawera Ultra-Trail by UTMB lists T14, T21, T50, T102 and TMiler events in Rotorua, New Zealand. Its T21 course page describes a route around Blue Lake, through redwoods and toward geothermal scenery. That range lets you research the same destination through more than one event format.

The longest available race is not automatically the right one. Compare how much time you expect to spend on the course, the terrain you want to experience and the support you need. If your first goal is to discover a new trail-running place, a shorter route can still provide a distinctive event experience.

Which race should you research first?

  • For alpine climbing: explore the individual UTMB Mont-Blanc courses and their entry rules.
  • For a 100-mile goal: study Western States qualification, the route and the expected conditions.
  • For several distance choices in one destination: compare Tarawera's current event pages.

Before entering any international event, verify the latest official route, schedule, eligibility, mandatory kit and cancellation terms. Then build your carry plan from route duration, water access, forecast and required equipment. Our trail race checklist helps turn organizer information into a practical pack list.
