Kodiak Ultra Marathons: Distance-Specific Kit Planning
Start your Kodiak packing plan by matching the distance, start venue and crew access. A kit left in Big Bear Village cannot help a 100-mile runner starting at Rim Nordic. Keep required equipment with the runner and make each permitted handoff a separate task.

Edition and route to confirm
The official 2026 race list places the 100M on October 9, starting and finishing at Rim Nordic Ski Area. The 100K, 50K, 21K and 10K are listed for October 10 with Big Bear Village starts and finishes. Check the current race page and final runner guide together; the festival runs October 8-11.
Organizer information that changes the load
The organizer links a current mandatory-equipment document from its race regulations page. Read the category for your entered distance rather than copying another UTMB event’s list. Its crew page limits help to designated locations and says public Mountain Transit does not serve the aid stations. For the 100M, pacers must carry the required 100M kit themselves; they cannot carry the runner’s water, food or equipment. These are selected rules, so the full organizer documents remain the reference.
Build the section-by-section packing plan
The organizer facts and LECAMO’s suggested packing actions are separated below. Suggested actions help you prepare; they do not add new race requirements.
| Decision | Organizer information | Suggested packing action |
|---|---|---|
| 100M departure | Rim Nordic start; confirm current transportation | Carry the opening section’s complete load before leaving your accommodation |
| Village-start races | 100K, 50K, 21K and 10K | Keep your start checklist distinct from a 100M crew itinerary |
| Remote crew stop | Some access uses organizer shuttles | Pack station-labelled supplies before the crew boards |
| Pacer section | No muling; separate pacer kit | Do not remove your own mandatory equipment at the handoff |
Prepare the handoff or refill before race day
Write one crew card for each permitted stop: race distance, station name, pass number, access method and the items to exchange. Doble Camp and Sugarloaf access are described through shuttles on the current crew page. Give the crew enough information to reach the correct stop without assuming a timing split is a live GPS position; the organizer warns that remote updates can be delayed. Confirm final access instructions before driving.
Test the vest with this race’s complete load

Rehearse a handoff while keeping your required items inside the vest. Replace fuel, close every compartment and identify the next confirmed support point. Have your pacer show their own kit instead of sharing yours. A useful rehearsal reveals whether the crew can find a labelled light or layer without emptying the whole bag.
ROOT5 is listed with 5L storage and two included 500ml soft flasks, giving one litre of container capacity. That describes the product configuration; it does not establish that the full race kit fits or that the carried water is sufficient. Compare your complete list with the current ROOT5 listing, then run with the filled load before choosing it for this entry.
Common preparation questions
Can a pacer carry my extra water?
The current Kodiak pacer rules prohibit muling. Plan your own carrying capacity and have the pacer carry their own required equipment.
Do all Kodiak distances start in the Village?
The current 2026 list places the 100M at Rim Nordic. The four shorter listed distances use Big Bear Village. Recheck the final event instructions.
