How to Clean and Store a Running Hat

Start with the care label for your exact running hat. Fabric, brim construction, adjustment hardware and printed details can have different care limits. A washing method that works for another hat is not enough evidence to use it on yours.

Build a routine around inspection, permitted cleaning, complete drying and storage that preserves the hat's shape. Check fit again before wearing it, especially if you have changed the adjustment or removed an accessory.

Read the label before washing

Identify whether the maker permits hand washing, machine washing or another method. Follow its temperature, detergent and drying limits. If the hat lacks usable care information, ask the maker before trying a more aggressive method.

Do not assume that a lightweight hat is dishwasher-safe or that a brim can tolerate being folded. These are construction-specific questions. Keep any care instructions with the product information so you can repeat the same process.

Inspect the areas that need attention

Look at the sweatband, inner seams, adjustment area and brim. Check for dirt, visible residue and damaged hardware before cleaning. Note anything that already looks worn so you can distinguish it from a change after washing.

Area Check before cleaning
Sweatband Visible residue and the permitted cleaning method
Brim Shape and construction-specific limits
Adjustment hardware Damage, fastening and care instructions
Printed details Restrictions on rubbing or cleaning products
Seams Loose or damaged sections needing support advice

Keep food residue and dirty equipment away from the hat while you inspect it. A hat should not share a storage spot with an open container that can spill onto it.

Use only the permitted process

If hand washing is allowed, follow the maker's instructions for the solution, water and handling. If spot cleaning is specified, treat the permitted area using that method. Do not substitute an unapproved solvent, disinfectant or stain treatment.

Check whether detachable parts are intended to be removed. Leave sealed or structural components alone. Finish the prescribed rinsing and drying sequence rather than putting the hat away as soon as the outside feels dry.

Dry and store without forcing the shape

Use the drying method on the label. Avoid applying heat or putting the hat in a machine dryer unless explicitly permitted. Once it is dry, place it where other equipment will not crush the brim or strain the adjustment hardware.

If you store the hat in your vest during an outing, check the available space first. A pocket that accepts the hat only when you sharply fold the brim may not suit that particular construction.

Recheck fit before the next outing

Inspect the adjustment and put the hat on. Confirm the usual fit and unobstructed view. If you are choosing another hat, the running hat selection guide gives you the broader selection checks.

The trail running sun-protection guide covers the rest of the sun-protection plan. Cleaning a hat does not establish its UV protection or replace the other measures appropriate for the route.

For a LECAMO hat, use the current product's care information or ask support for it. This general routine does not establish material-specific washing temperatures, machine safety or a protection rating.
