Carry a Spare Headlamp in a Running Vest
A spare headlamp needs a planned location, protection appropriate to its instructions and a way to retrieve it at a safe stop. Check the actual lamp and power source before packing. Storage space alone does not establish that the lamp will work when needed.
Choose the lighting plan using the route, expected daylight and any event requirements. This article covers how to carry a spare; it does not set a universal battery runtime or certify a light for every trail.
Check the exact lamp first
Read the lamp instructions for charging or batteries, transport settings and storage limits. Confirm its condition and operation before putting it into the vest. If the maker provides a transport lock, use it as directed.
Keep any required spare power source according to the lamp and battery instructions. Do not mix unverified components or assume another model's battery will work. If instructions are unclear, resolve that before relying on the lamp for the route.

Pack the complete item
Include the headband, case and any protection you intend to use. Test that full shape in the chosen pocket. Check that the closure finishes normally and that another item does not press against a control contrary to the transport instructions.
| Checkpoint | Question |
|---|---|
| Operation | Was the lamp checked before packing? |
| Power | Does the actual power setup match its instructions? |
| Transport | Is any prescribed lock or storage mode used? |
| Protection | Are the lamp's water and storage limits respected? |
| Access | Can I retrieve the spare at a safe stop? |
Choose an accessible location
Pack it where you can find it without emptying loose food or keys onto the ground. Keep the location consistent during practice. If you use a separate pouch, check that the pouch still passes through the pocket opening.
Use the night trail visibility guide when preparing the wider lighting and visibility plan. Reflective details on a pack do not establish a source of illumination for seeing the trail.
Rehearse the change at a safe stop
On familiar ground, stop, retrieve the spare and use it according to its instructions. Return the original lamp and any loose components to their planned place. Check that the pocket can close with the changed arrangement.
Do not try this for the first time while moving on a technical section. If you must remove the vest to reach the spare, know that sequence before departing.
Keep the route plan complete
Pair the lighting check with the trail running safety plan. Review the route, navigation, conditions and the plan shared with an appropriate person. A spare lamp does not replace those preparations.
At home after the outing, follow the lamp's care and power instructions, inspect the pocket and restore the planned arrangement. For LECAMO or another vest, test the exact lamp and case; a pocket photograph is not a compatibility table or a guarantee of night-running safety.
