Running Vest Over or Under a Rain Jacket? Test Both
The useful arrangement is the one that lets you wear the jacket correctly, reach your essentials and carry the required load comfortably. Try both positions with the actual jacket and vest before deciding. The answer can change when you switch layers or add equipment.
Neither arrangement establishes that your pack or its contents will stay dry. Check garment instructions and plan separate protection for items that need it. This is a fit and access test, not a weather-performance rating.
Start with the jacket on its own
Close the jacket as you normally would and move your arms. Check the hood, cuffs and front zip before adding the vest. Then load the vest with the water and equipment intended for the route.
Follow the sizing and adjustment instructions for your exact vest. Do not copy chest measurements or closure positions from another model. The running vest sizing guide gives you a sequence for comparing the loaded fit.

Test the vest over the jacket
Check whether the jacket bunches under the pack or around the closures. Breathe deeply, reach forward and rotate your shoulders. Confirm that the jacket's required closure and hood adjustments remain usable.
Try drinking and retrieving an item at a safe stop. Note whether the vest blocks the jacket zip or whether pocket access changes. If you need to remove the jacket during the outing, rehearse the complete sequence in a safe place.
Test the jacket over the vest
The jacket must still fit the complete loaded shape and close normally. Do not stretch it around the pack just to make the arrangement look tidy. Check whether the water mouthpiece and front pockets remain accessible without leaving the garment awkwardly open.
Check the hood and arm movement again. If either arrangement requires forcing a zip or compressing an item into your chest, change the setup before taking it onto a longer route.
| Question | Vest over jacket | Jacket over vest |
|---|---|---|
| Can the garment close normally? | Check fabric under the pack | Check space around the full load |
| Can I reach drinking equipment? | Test normal reach | Test access through or around the garment |
| Can I change layers at a stop? | Rehearse removing the vest | Rehearse removing the jacket |
| Are protected items still protected? | Check their separate containers | Check their separate containers |
Plan the change of layers
Decide where the removed jacket will go. A layer that fits outside the pack may still take significant space when packed away. Recheck that it does not obstruct the reservoir hose or crowd the phone pocket.
The cold-weather layering guide helps you build the clothing plan. Use current conditions and the route requirements; the vest arrangement alone does not determine suitable insulation or rain protection.
Make a short practice outing
Use familiar ground where you can stop and adjust safely. Wear the intended layers and complete load. Test walking, easy running, drinking and retrieving the items you expect to use.
For LECAMO or another vest, choose the arrangement supported by your garment and pack instructions and the results of this practical fitting check. Repeat when the weather plan, jacket or carry list changes.
