Zipped vs Stretch Running Vest Pockets: Where to Carry Each Item

A running vest can have enough storage and still be awkward to use. The question is where each item belongs and how its pocket opens when the vest is loaded.

Use zipped and stretch pockets according to the task each item creates. Begin with the objects you carry, then check the available closures on your exact model.

Give small loose items a deliberate home

Look at keys, identification and any other small loose objects. Choose a compartment with a suitable closure or the manufacturer’s intended attachment system.

Check that the closure operates fully after the rest of the kit is packed. Avoid placing a key where it presses against a phone screen or sits in the zipper path.

A zipped compartment can be a useful place to start this check. Its practical value depends on its size, position and how it is used.

Test stretch pockets with the actual contents

Put your intended snacks or other accessible items into the pocket. Notice whether the opening still holds them as designed once the vest is on your body.

Walk, bend and move your arms during a controlled fitting session. Do not assume that every open pocket is suitable for every object. A smooth hard item and a soft packet may sit very differently.

For food placement specifically, follow our fuel pocket organization guide. Keep the larger pocket plan focused on the items you actually carry.

Compare access while stationary

Try each closure without taking the vest off. Notice whether you need two hands, whether a nearby bottle blocks the opening and whether the contents are easy to put back.

Frequently used items deserve a position you can manage. That does not mean every pocket should be left open or that access should happen while moving on difficult terrain.

REI’s vest selection guide notes the access tradeoff between zipped and stretch pockets. Your own loaded test tells you how that tradeoff applies to the model you are considering.

Reserve phone space early

Pack the phone in its normal case before filling every nearby pocket. Close its designated compartment and check for pressure from adjacent bottles or hard objects.

Use our phone pocket fit guide for the device measurements. Pocket retention and rain protection need separate consideration; a zipper by itself does not establish waterproof storage.

Draw a pocket map

Write a short list that gives each item one location. For example: phone in the checked phone compartment, keys in their separate secure place, food in accessible pockets and a spare layer in rear storage.

For LECAMO, compare this map with the current model’s actual layout. Leave space around closures and repeat the check with full water containers. A useful pocket arrangement should make packing and retrieving your kit predictable.
