TransLantau Gear Guide: Cups, Lights and Clothing by Distance

A TransLantau packing list needs your distance at the top. The published equipment requirements differ, especially for lights and clothing. Check the required kit before deciding which vest configuration to take.

This guide belongs to our Hong Kong race directory. The summaries below highlight packing differences; the linked organizer pages contain the full specifications.

Dates and selected official requirements

Format and official page Date and listed distance Selected requirements affecting storage
TL100 November 13, 2026; 104km Two working torches, spare batteries for each, waterproof hooded jacket, midlayer
TL50 November 14, 2026; 45km One working torch with a spare battery; windproof jacket
TL25 November 15, 2026; 27km See its own mandatory list; do not substitute the TL100 list
TL15 November 15, 2026; 15km See its own mandatory list

All four linked lists specify resealable hydration containers with at least 1L capacity, a separate collapsible cup of at least 150ml, a phone with the specified apps, an emergency blanket or bag and a whistle. Lidded bottles and flasks do not replace the cup. Read all dimensions and clothing specifications on your page. A minimum container capacity does not determine the water you personally need between refills.

TransLantau mandatory gear questions for 2026

Which official equipment page should I check?

Read the page for the distance you entered. The general mandatory equipment table still includes TL120 and differs from the individual pages in categories and specifications. The comparison here follows the linked 2026 distance pages. If instructions conflict, obtain the organizer’s clarification before finalizing your kit.

Do I need a separate cup if I carry soft flasks?

The four individual pages require a collapsible personal cup of at least 150ml and explicitly exclude lidded bottles or flasks as substitutes. Check cup capacity, then rehearse access independently of the drinking containers.

How do lighting and jacket requirements differ?

Distance page Lighting listed as mandatory Clothing distinction
TL100 Two working torches; spare cells or batteries for each Waterproof and breathable hooded jacket with sealed seams; midlayer
TL50 One working torch and one spare battery Windproof jacket mandatory; waterproof jacket highly recommended
TL25 No torch entry in its current mandatory section Waterproof jacket highly recommended
TL15 No torch entry in its current mandatory section Waterproof jacket highly recommended

This is a selected comparison. Read the complete requirements and the detailed TL100 jacket specifications on your own official page. A phone or watch does not substitute for the specified torch in the longer formats.

Does 1L capacity mean I can start with empty containers?

The individual pages specify containers capable of carrying at least 1L, while the general table uses “water supply” wording. Do not infer permission to carry less water from that difference. Confirm the final instruction and plan your actual departure volume for the relevant section. Our water-system comparison helps with storage and refill access; it does not determine your race’s water requirement.

Keep the cup separate from the water supply

Dedicate an accessible location to the cup. Do not assume two front flasks remove the need for it. Rehearse taking out the cup while the phone, water and food remain secure.

After using it, store it where moisture will not reach clothing you need dry. Our cup carry guide covers practical access and storage.

Protect clothing while preserving access

For TL100, arrange the outer layer and midlayer so you can reach them independently. Put the larger protected items in the main storage area, then find a way to retrieve them without emptying the reserve food.

For TL50, begin with that distance's required windproof layer and check the full official list and recommendations. Do not relabel a recommendation as mandatory, or assume an ordinary garment meets a technical jacket specification.

Fit the vest with the actual folded garments. Take a layer out, put it on and repack it. Use our rain protection checks to keep phone and dry items organized.

Arrange the lights for the distance you entered

For TL100, give the main and backup lights distinct locations. Rehearse retrieving the second without moving your full water supply. Check the spare batteries for each lamp against the official requirement.

For TL50, test the lamp and spare-battery arrangement you plan to carry. For the shorter formats, consult their lists directly. A habit from a previous race should not replace the correct equipment check.

Suggested packing zone What to organize there
Front access Drinking containers and next-use food
Separate small pocket Collapsible cup
Protected accessible pocket Phone and any charging supplies
Larger protected storage Required clothing and emergency items
Dedicated light storage Your distance's lamps and spares

This is a layout suggestion, not an additional rule or universal pocket specification.

Fit the complete kit before choosing capacity

Use the capacity guide with the complete load inside. Do not treat nominal pack volume as proof that all required equipment fits. Check closures, bib visibility and access while wearing your intended layers.

For rules about carrying equipment and poles throughout the event, consult the organizer regulations. Make your final check against the current race page before departure.
